Ingredient Spotlight: The Benefits of Aloe to your Skin

Living in Australia, it’s likely you’ve at some point in your life been scorched by the sun and used a little gel directly from an aloe plant to soothe the burn but what you might not know is how many other skin benefits this incredible plant has.
Aloe is an ingredient in a huge range of our products including our Balancing Combination Cream, Clarifyl Spot Treatment, Soothing Sensitive Skin Mask, and De-Ageing Mists. Read on to discover more about this wonder-plant and how it could help your skin.

What is Aloe?
Aloe is a family of around 500 succulent plants of which the most well known is Aloe Vera which translates to true aloe. The family is thought to have originated in Africa and has been frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine since the beginning of the first century AD.
Aloe Vera has been dubbed the ‘first aid plant’ and is commonly used on burns, cuts, and even bites.

What skin benefits does aloe have?
– Soothing
Aloe is a natural moisturizer with a cooling, calming effect on the skin, making it ideal for sensitive skin types. You’ll find aloe as a main ingredient in much of our Sensitive Skin Line  . Our Spa Teen All Skin Types Lotion also contains aloe to help protect young skin which tends to be more on the sensitive side.
– Healing
Both our Purifying Skin Mask and Clarifyl Spot Treatment feature Aloe to help increase blood circulation to the surface of your skin to speed up the healing process and nourish damaged cells.
– Hydrating
Our famous Dry Oil Body Moisturiser contains aloe to hydrate and heal dry skin.

– Anti-Ageing
Aloe contains amino acids, fatty acids, zinc and vitamins C and E, all of which are important in the process of skin repair, making it the perfect anti-ageing product. Plus it helps oxygenate the skin too. Our De Ageing Mists feature aloe to help stop the aging process.

How to Use Enzymo-Sphérides Peeling Cream

Our Enzymo-Spherides Peeling Cream is a firm favourite among Pevonia fans. It’s like a facial in a jar – eliminating impurities, blackheads, dead cells, sebum, and toxins to leave you with softer, brighter and clearer skin.
It contains Pineapple and Papaya Enzymes Spherides for deep cleansing as well as Gingko, Calendula, Chamomile, Lemon, Horse Chestnut and Arnica for calming, soothing, brightening and healing benefits. It is gentle enough to use twice a week and is the perfect way to keep your skin looking its best between spa visits.

To get the most from this product, you do need to put in a little extra effort but it is beyond worth it when you see the incredible results.
Here we take you through the steps so you can see how this extraordinary product works…
1. Cleanse and tone the skin then blot dry to remove any surface dirt, oil and makeup. This will ensure the peel is able to work deep into the layers of the epidermis.
2. Apply a layer of Enzymo-Spherides Peeling Cream all over your face and neck, avoiding the eye area. It’s best to leave about half an inch around the eyes to protect the delicate skin.
3. Wet your fingers with warm water and gently work the product into the skin. You do not need much water at this stage, you’re not trying to wash the product away! At this stage the enzymes which are encapsulated in micro-spherides, are becoming active and digesting all impurities, sebum and toxins in the skin.
4. After about two minutes you will notice the product has almost disappeared from the skin. At this stage, wet your fingers again and repeat the process. This re-working will activate any left over enzymes, working deeper into the pores to cleanse.
5. Take two cotton pads moist with warm water to remove the last of the peeling cream then cleanse thoroughly to ensure any traces of enzymes have been washed away.

How Eating Sugar Can Affect Your Skin

Recently we’ve felt a little like we can hardly switch on the tv, open our internet browser or listen to the radio without hearing about the adverse effects of sugar. Yes, some of these reports are perhaps getting a little out of hand and indulging in the occasional macaroon isn’t going to end in doom and gloom but the general message is definitely a good one when it comes to your skin.

How does sugar effect the skin?
When sugar travels into the skin, its components cause nearby amino acids to form cross-links. These cross-links jam the repair mechanism and, over time, leave you with premature wrinkles. Not only that but when blood sugar goes up rapidly, sugar can attach itself to collagen in a process called “glycation.” This causes the skin to become stiff and inflexible. This loss of elasticity, also caused my too much sun exposure, is a fast track to visibly aged skin. if you feel you’ve experience a loss of elasticity, try our Firming Marine Elastin Cream. It delivers powerful repairing and tightening benefits along with UV protection to help protect and repair.

It’s not just about aging either, your body attempts to bring blood sugar levels down after spikes caused by excess sugar consumption by excreting a surge of hormones. All these hormones cause your skin sebum glands to go into hyper drive, producing excess oil in the skin. If this is you, get that oil under control with our Oily Skin Line. It will help regulate oil production while you cut down on your sugar intake.

Why can we do?
First of all, make sure you’re using the right products for your skin to counteract any damage that has been done. If you’re concerned about aging, try our Power Repair Range. If you’re experiencing excess oil production, our Oily Skin Care Range will do the trick.

Once that’s under control, start working to cut down the sugar in your diet. Remember it’s not just “incidental sugar” like chocolate, lollies and a teaspoon in our coffee that’s causing a problem. Take a look at the items in your pantry and your fridge and you’ll be shocked to discover just how much sugar you’re consuming. Cereals, snack foods, condiments and even low-fat dairy products are rife with sugar. When you’re doing your groceries, read the labels and aim for less than 6g of sugar per 100g of food/drink.

Six Common Skin Care Mistakes

When it comes to skin care, there are some little mistakes that are just all too common. The problem with these smaller mistakes is that they are the less-obvious culprits when it comes to problems like breakouts, sensitivity, dryness and dullness so we don’t immediately think of them and eradicate them.
Read through these and see if you’re making any of the most common skin care mistakes. If you are, change your habits and watch your skin improve!

1. Over Cleansing
Cleansing too often can cause the skin to try out leaving the sebaceous glands to overproduce, so you end up with skin that’s both dehydrated and superficially oily, leaving it prone to breakouts. Cleansing twice a day with a cleanser that suits your skin type is enough to keep your skin healthy.

2. Jumping Straight to Power Products
At Pevonia, we recommend ALL customers start on our essential range products. We have complete lines for Sensitive, Oily, Dry and Combination skin. After three months on the essential range, the skin will be ready for a more active range and customers can switch or simply incorporate some of the more active products into their routine.
Often in skin care people are looking for a quick fix so they want to jump straight in the deep end but the real results come from a more gentle, long term approach.

3. Exfoliating Too Often
People with dry skin often want to exfoliate every day, thinking it will help slough away flakes and dead skin cells but too much exfoliation can, in fact, leave the skin ever dryer, leaving it to look dull and lifeless. Exfoliate twice to three times a week with a gentle exfoliator for best results.

4. Switching Skincare Too Often
Your epidermis is very delicate and changing products as often as you change your sheets can throw off your skin’s pH levels. Stick with a product line for at least three months to start seeing real results and introduce new products gradually. Similarly, skin care brands generally create their products to work together so you will often find your best results when you use a complete range.

5. Forgetting SPF
Living in Australia, we just can’t stress this point enough. Sun damage ages your skin like nothing else and you will grow to regret it if you neglect your SPF. We completely understand that sometimes sunscreens feel too harsh and oily on the face but our Hydrating Sunscreen is enriched with vitamins that protect and nourish.

6. Neglecting Cream
Often women who suffer from oily skin think they don’t need moisturiser. Wrong! Moisture from oil is different from the moisture we get from creams and, just like if you over-cleanse, if you neglect your cream your skin will react to being dried out by creating more oil! If you’ve got oily skin, try our Mattifying Oily Skin Care Cream. It is light, non-greasy and helps to control oiliness while hydrating.
