I find many people I speak to know they SHOULD exfoliate their face but manage to skip over this step week after week (myself included at times!). Exfoliation needs to be part of a weekly beauty routine not only to care for your skin but to get the most out of the skincare products you’re spending your hard earned money on.
Like the dead skin cells that build up and need to be removed, let’s break down exfoliation…
Your skin is constantly generating new cells and sending them to the skin’s surface. As we age cell renewal slows down and the old skin cells start to build up on the skin’s surface which can lead to a dull, rough and dry looking complexion – a look we don’t want reflected in the mirror!
Exfoliation rejuvenates the texture and appearance of skin to reveal a fresh, healthy complexion! Afterwards skin is more receptive to serums, lotions and creams so you can truly enjoy the benefits of your skincare products.
Mechanical vs. Enzymes Exfoliators
A mechanical exfoliator contains granules to gently buff the surface of the skin to remove toxins and impurities. The granules work to soften skin and remove dead cells for a polished glowing complexion.
My pick, the Pevonia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser with jojoba beads to decongest pores and smooth the skin’s surface leaving it soft and supple. The beads are enveloped in a creamy water soluble formula with ingredients like Calendula and Horse Chestnut to cleanse, soothe and calm skin.
Enzyme exfoliators dissolve the dead skin cells and work into the deeper layers of the skin. Think of the enzyme like a tiny pack man that eats away the dead cells to deeply cleanse and refresh skin.
My pick (and personal favourite from the Pevonia range) is the Pevonia Enzymo-Spherides Peeling Cream. This wonder product revitalises my skin leaving it smooth and enviously luminous. The deliciously scented pineapple and papaya enzymes are almost tangible, making this both a treat for my skin and the senses! …can you tell I love it?
How often to exfoliate
Exfoliate 1-3 times per week depending on the type of skin you have. For sensitive skin once a week is perfect, you don’t way to irritate or dehydrate your skin from over exfoliation. 3 times a week is fantastic for thick, tougher skin.
So go out there and get exfoliatin’ to see the benefits for yourself!
