Cream vs Serum

Which skincare do you prefer to use, cream or serum, and why?

Some will be quick to say it’s CREAM because it’s what they’ve been using for the longest time and it works. They’re right.

Some will instantaneously say SERUM because it’s the trend these days and it’s really, really effective. They’re right too!

What’s the difference between a cream and a serum? Which one is more effective? Do you need both in your skincare regime?

  1. A serum is a high concentration of active ingredients. It contains the most potent dose of antioxidants and peptides. A serum is formulated liquid-like to be easily absorbed into the skin and because it’s lightweight, it suits all skin types.
  2. Cream is still the most popular skin care product. Because creams contain oil, it’s nourishing and moisturising. It may contain specific actives that that address specific skin concerns.
  3. Which is more effective? Cream and serum do different things. A cream is better at moisturising while a serum is better at immediately delivering specific treatment actives.
  4. Do you need both in your skincare regime? Definitely! Apply serum first to let the antioxidants and peptides work its way deep into your skin for immediate skin therapy. Apply cream after a few minutes to infuse your skin with more moisture.

Some use either of the two but we strongly suggest you use both for maximum results!

Say Goodbye to Sensitive Skin for Good

Sick of sensitive skin? Find it’s a constant no matter what the season? Long for beautifully hydrated glowing skin? You are not alone! We are here to answer each of our customers skin woes, so read on and learn how to keep red, itchy, sensitive skin under control.

Oh and don’t forget! Even if you only get sensitivity symptoms every so often, our sensitive skin range of products can also help to protect and restore your skin’s natural moisture barrier and soothe every skin type.

Is my skin definitely sensitive?

Sadly sensitive skin is not a skin ‘type’ that is restricted to a small percentage of people. We all will experience skin sensitivities on occasion whether we are generally prone to it or not. This is because there are soo many factors that can affect our complexion on a daily basis. However if you are experiencing areas of dryness, blemishes and redness, your skin feels irritable and stingy you do suffer from more severe sensitive skin.

Why do I have sensitive skin?

Everyone’s skin is different and sensitive skin can sadly be the outcome of a number of different reasons;

  • Genetics – your genes have a significant influence on your skin because skin is made up of so many proteins.
  • Dirt and pollution – hard to avoid, dirt such as dust, car fumes etc…can be absorbed by the skin’s natural barrier irritating and weakening it.
  • A change in season and therefore weather – warm and cold weather as well as the sun’s rays can damage your skin barrier.
  • Hard water (yes this can really cause skin irritation!) – due to the high levels of minerals like iron, magnesium and calcium, hard water is highly alkaline which effects our skin’s natural pH balance.
  • The wrong products – using the wrong products can cause skin to become irritated and sore. Avoid over cleansing & avoid potent or harsh ingredients including fragrance, colouring and alcohol.
  • Your lifestyle – Smoking, drinking, lack of sleep, travel can all impact your skin.
  • Stress – This can be a combination of factors which can lead to an imbalance in your hormones in turn causing your skin to slow down, not repairing your barrier as quickly as it should.
  • Diet – Many sugar rich or fatty foods contain skin irritants. Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water.

Will I always have sensitive skin or can I prevent it?

Sensitive skin isn’t ideal when you want to look and feel your best – but don’t worry with the right skincare and clear beauty routine you can actually reduce and control skin sensitively permanently.

Are there specific ingredients that I should look for that will help calm my skin?

Look for natural products. Soothing, calming and nurturing ingredients including camomile, calendula, aloe, lavender, propolis will all help to overcome skin sensitivities.

So now you know what can cause sensitive skin, and specific ingredients to look out for, how can you decrease the sensitivity and improve the look and feel of your skin on a daily basis?

While we can’t change the environment, we can improve the quality of our lifestyle and diet which will help but, choosing the right products will have the quickest and most long-lasting effect.

We recommend the following products, so give them a go and see why so many of our customers rave about them.

The must have’s to keep your skin glowing all winter long

Pevonia Organic Skincare Australia skin care winter productsOur sun-kissed summer facade has long since faded, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept dull, lifeless-looking skin all winter long. This season we are not only on a mission to combat dryness and keep hydrated, but also to maintain a natural, healthy glow. From vitamin-rich serums to the best of facial exfoliators to skin brightening boosters, these are the products we need to include in our winter-proof radiance routine.

We all know that cooler weather plays havoc on our skin. Changes in temperature, heating, hot showers, cold air, wind dehydrate and devitalise our skin often leaving it rough, dry and sometimes flaky (great!) this means we have to get ahead of the game and step up our skincare TLC.

Pevonia offers great solutions to ensure your skin remains soft and hydrated from head to toe. Not sure where to start? We listed our fan and professional favourites to help you keep your skin glowing all winter long.

  1. Exfoliation is key

Make sure you shed those dry dead skin cells as a build-up is no good for anyone! A regular scrub (think twice per week) using a gentle exfoliator will make all the difference. Try Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser. This rather lovely, gentle exfoliator will not only remove unwanted dead nasties but will promise to have your skin impeccably clean, soft and radiant in a matter of moments.

  1. Step up the moisture

Switch to a more nourishing moisturiser and if you haven’t already introduce a serum to your beauty repertoire. Skin is extra thirsty in winter and will benefit from a quenching dose of moisture in the form of Intensifier Collagen & Myoxy Caviar and Marine Collagen Cream, the dynamic duo! Apply a few drops of the intensifier (serum) beneath the moisturizer for a dewy radiant complexion while the Collagen Cream seals in vital moisture and imparts comfort for your skin…all day long.

  1. Night nurturing

Before bed lather your face with a vitamin-rich serum (just as you’d take a multi-vitamin tablet for health & wellbeing). Try Vitaminic Concentrate. The radical treatment for skin lacking lustre combats dehydration with a burst of vitamins A, E You’re your complexion really will look brighter and rejuvenated by morning.

  1. Love your eyes

One particular area quick to suffer the effects of winter are the eyes. Often taken for granted, this sensitive area is usually the first to show signs of aging and lack of care. Drench the eye contours with super hydrating Eye Contour rich in Collagen and skin firming elastin. Dehydration lines will be a thing of the past!

  1. Body Love

Lather your body as you would your face, with plenty of rich cream and pay particular attention to super dry areas such as elbows, knees and heels.

Applying your body lotion/cream in the bathroom following a warm bath or shower is a great way to ensure your body readily absorbs the moisture as the warmth in the air will help open your pores thus locking in the moisture. Try Preserve Body Moisturiser. Rich in oils, vitamins and phyto-extracts which restore the skins essential lipids, leaving it soft and hydrated.

  1. Safeguard skin

Just because it isn’t hot (and potentially sunny, blue skies) doesn’t mean you should slack off with the sunscreen. A super hydrating sunscreen in the winter months will benefit your ailing dry skin. Try Hydrating Sunscreen SPF
